40 Bags Update

I have an update, but not much of one.  The entire family (except me) had the rotovirus.  It was a week and a half of GI distress.  It hit kids #2 and #3 especially hard.  We are on the road to recovery, but I spent a lot of time tending to the sick as opposed to organizing the house.  Here are the bags I was able to get rid of:
  • 2 bags of recycling - magazines I was holding on to.  I saved the articles in a folder and got rid of the magazines
  • 2 more bags of kids clothes to friends
  • 3 bags of stuff to post office (I have made $350 this month on eBay!)
  • 1 bag of clothes returned to store (I held on too for way too long.)
That is 8 more bags for a total of 12.  I am a few off the pace, but I have big plans for tomorrow and next week.

In 13 Months

I'll be forty.  I wrote about this first (and last) when there were 18 months until my birthday.  I am still in the planning phase of my "transition" into a new decade.  I really am interested in making some wholesale changes in my lifestyle and the lifestyle of my family.   Here were my goals from before:

Deepen my relationship with God
Make time for my marriage
Create a solid family bond
Have a healthy lifestyle
Develop organization systems for the household
Create some business pursuits
Be debt free except for our house
Learn to spend my time wisely
Create a happy loving home

I will have some progress to report in a month or so on a few, but I don't want to jinx it!  I am so wishy washy and have always found it difficult to make a decision.  One thing I have learned is that I am a pleaser.  I love to help, pitch in, volunteer, and make others happy even if I am not!  That as to change too.  That is why I am adding:

Find peace and happiness with myself

With 3 daughters to raise I need them to be strong confident women, but I need to get there first.

I'll keep you posted!

This Mom Recommends

Sane Woman's Guide to Raising a Large Family, A
I was drawn to this book right away.  Since I feel like I just entered the world of the "large family" I wanted to read this book and find out if you can maintain your sanity and raise a large family.  Turns out, you can.  The author, Mary Ostyn, has ten children.  She shares some insight on all kinds of topics, housework, finances, schooling, sibling relations, wanting a bigger house, and extra activities.  She did help me to realize that I am my own worst critic.  There are plenty of things I give to my kids that aren't things.  I sometimes get caught up in the fact that my kids don't have exactly what they want.  (Believe me, they have plenty.)  I also feel a bit of mommy guilty about all the responsibility my kids have. She has a real plan for housework and does make her kids do some.  I gained some insight about responsibilities and how to divide them.  If you have a large family or want to someday, it is a quick and easy read that has wise advice.

40 Bags Update

There have been 4 days of Lent so far and I have been keeping up with my Bag Challenge. 2 bags left the house Ash Wednesday to the post office.  I have been listing and selling unwanted items on eBay.  I also cleaned up in my room and have 2 bags for donation.  I have plans to move to closets next week and the basement the next.

Our Plans for Lent

I have been thinking for a while how we will spend our 40 days in preparation for Easter.  I have thought of all the things we could give up and all the sweets we won't eat, but then a friend told me they usually add something too.

So here are some of our plans:

1. We are going to participate in the 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge.  It is from last year, but I just found it and we could always use a good decluttering.

2. I am going to spend a few Friday evenings teaching the kids the Stations of the Cross.

3. We will be celebrating the feasts of St. Patrick and  St. Joseph.  My friend Jen has a great resource on her blog.  Our church has a celebration for St. Joseph.

4. I also want to celebrate The Annunciation on March 25th this year.

5. We need to refocus our efforts on The Rosary.  We have fallen of the wagon on this.

How are you celebrating Lent this year?
